Bollards can help improve safety and security as well as prevent damage and injuries.  Done right, they can also provide a design element for your business.

Safety and Traffic Flow

If you’re walking down the sidewalk, it’s easy to slip off the curb, especially if there’s a crowd. Bollards can help effectively contain movement by providing a visual barrier that’s more noticeable than a curb.  They can act as a literal barrier to prevent collisions between vehicles and pedestrians or vehicles and structures.

By providing a visual – and physical – barrier, they can help alert drivers to potential dangers, such as running into guard booths or stairwells.

They can also safely direct the flow of traffic to maintain an orderly progression in parking areas and parking zones.

Security and Theft Prevention

For high security areas, they can prevent vehicle intrusion.  For stores and retailers, they prevent someone from driving into a store – either by losing control or intentionally.  They can help stop damage to the storefront, as well as make it more difficult for thieves by creating an anti-ram barrier.

They might have helped at an Indianapolis hobby store where a stolen car was used to smash into the front and grab thousands of dollars of merchandise, according to WISH-TV.  The Best Buy in Kansas City was hit when thieves used a stolen Jeep to ram thought the front door, according to KCTV.  The crooks smashed glass cases, grabbed electronics, and left in a second vehicle they had stashed as a getaway car.

In each case, not only did owners have to deal with the loss of merchandise, but the downtime that comes with the damage, and the cost of repairs.

Creative Design

Bollards can also be used to create an aesthetically pleasing design.

Flexible and Impact-Resistant

Impact-resistant installations provide a visual presence to help in both high traffic areas and parking lots.  By providing a physical barrier, they can prevent collisions between vehicles and pedestrians.  They may crack or break upon severe impact, but are effective in preventing injuries or deaths.  They can also provide a solid line of defense that can withstand impact.

Flexible installations can provide a visual guide for traffic flow and keep vehicles and pedestrians from casually entering key areas.  They provide both a visual cue and a physical barrier.  Hitting a flexible bollard will give instant feedback to a driver.  They’ll feel it.  However, it usually doesn’t damage the vehicle.

They can be permanently installed on a mounted base, or with a quick release mechanism to be easily reset.
